ECCC: Babes and Bitches: Redefining the Strong Female Character

With the popularity of books like The Hunger Games, Divergent, and Children of Blood and Bone, there’s a lot of discussion about ‘strong female characters’, especially in young adult books. However, this label is often applied very narrowly and in a way that reinforces stereotypes instead of breaking them. In this panel, we’re going to pick this label apart and explore the many ways women are smashing the literary patriarchy. All panelists are authors published by major publishing houses.

The signing will occur before this panel, at 5:15PM.

ECCC: Resist, Rebel, Rise Up: SF/F Writers and the Politics of Oppression

From seemingly small acts of defiance to full scale rebellions, the characters of science fiction and fantasy have led us to victory against all types of villains. Are these acts of resistance simply for literary pleasure, or do they carry a greater weight? Join us as authors Jeff Wheeler (The Harbinger series), Ashley & Leslie Saunders (The Rule of One), Somaiya Daud (Mirage), and Meg Elison (The Book of Flora discuss how they use speculative fiction to shine a light on current events and social issues, and also provide a path toward hope for the future.

Somaiya will be unavailable to sign after this event. If you would like books signed, please come to the 5:15p signing on March 15, at the Writer’s Block, level 6, tables 3&4.

Launch and In Conversation with Django Wexler

Join Brick and Mortar Books and I as we celebrate the launch of Django Wexler’s YA fantasy Ship of Smoke and Steel. From the Brick and Mortar Books website:

We’re excited to announce we’re hosting an in-conversation with two fantastic YA fantasy authors: Django Wexler and Somaiya Daud!

Somaiya Daud’s debut Mirage is one of our all-time favorite young adult fantasy novels. With a setting inspired by Morocco and in space, questions about identity and history, and a brewing rebellion, this gorgeous book is not one to miss.

The event will also coincide with the release of Django Wexler’s new epic Wells of Sorcery trilogy launch with Ship of Smoke and Steel!

Django Wexler is the author of the completed Shadow Campaigns military fantasy series for adults and the Forbidden Library series for middle readers, and his new YA is just as epic as his work is known to be. It’s a fast-paced, high-stakes story in an inventive world full of action and fantastic character relationships.

We can’t wait to hear what these two authors have to say about fantastic worlds, stories of epic stakes and compassion, and powerful women. We hope you can join us!
